Caye Caulker, a small, tranquil, bohemian island off Belize's mainland, offers both a relaxing holiday and a adventure filled Caribbean experience.

Slow Down and Take Your Shoes Off are terms often associated with Caye Caulker. Of the two popular islands off the coast of Belize, Caye Caulker is considered quieter and less exploited. This makes for a great destination for those seeking a relaxing vacation. However, the numerous activities offered just beyond the shores of this Caye also make it an ideal location for those searching for adventure.

How To Get There

There are two main ways to reach Caye Caulker; boat or plane. If you take an international flight into Belize City, you can pre-arrange a transfer from the Philip Goldson Airport. Alternately, you can take a plane from Belize city Municipal Airport. The flight is 10 minutes and will cost around $60. Your second choice is grabbing a water taxi from Belize City. The trip will last 45 minutes and cost $20 round trip.

Accommodations in Caye Caulker

Accommodations are generally less expensive in Caye Caulker than the more tourist oriented Ambergris Caye. The prices range from $8-$200 so it is best to do some research. For those who don't mind being approached on the water taxi dock, arrangements can be made when you arrive. Charming hostels and guest houses used to be main choice for rooms but there are some condos and apartments popping up.

Relax, Read a Book or Get a Massage

On the island itself, there is not an abundance of activities. Explore the island by foot, bike or golf cart. Many guest houses supply bikes for free (or a small fee). Otherwise relax, enjoy the sun, a good book, sleep in a hammock or visit with locals at a cafe. Enjoy a seaside massage. Chilaxing is the name of the game on this island. A great place to chill and relax is at the Lazy Lizard, near the split. They serve food and drinks so you will never get hungry while you suntan.

Sightseeing Tours From the Island

There is a multitude of activities available at the doorstep of Caye Caulker. On Front Street it seems every third building or hut is offering excursions. There isn't a lot of variance in the prices. All the snorkeling trips will cost about the same amount. The difference, however, comes from the experience of the trip. Carlos Snorkeling is run by Carlos who is passionate about marine life and his clients benefit from that passion. Ask around or check guide books for advice.
